Anyone Know what "b" in y=mx+b means?

I know it's the y-intercept, but I'd like to know what it stands for. I know Rene Descartes made this up, and my teacher told me the "m" (slope), stands for "montagne" (French for mountain), and it would please me if I knew what "b" stood for. Thanks. |||Often it's written:

y = ax + b.

Since the a is slope, and the symbol for slope is often 'm', we can replace a with m.

y = mx + b.

So if I'm correct here, the 'b' means nothing special. It's quite literally a place-holder for a number (which happens to be the y-intercept).|||I always thought that m stood for 'monter'..to climb...as for b, I haven't a clue...sorry.
