Were you happy to hear that National Public Radio layed off 64 people? ?

Should the government be in business of funding and controlling radio stations?

National Public Radio -- now laying off 64 employees and shutting down two programs -- has some perhaps surprising salary figures :

NPR reported its five highest paid employees were:

1. Managing Editor Barbara Rehm, $383,139

2. All Things Considered host Robert Siegel [pictured], $350,288

3. Morning Edition host Renee Montagne, $332,160

4. Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep, $331,242

5. NPR afternoon programming director Richard L. Harris, $190,267.

Should taxpayer money be used to pay these clowns a salary higher than the President of the United States?|||Don't forget to send in your donation....NOT|||They are SO boring. My coworker listens to it online. Give me Howard Stern any day!|||Fair study found that NPR leans Right by a 3 to 2 margin, I always knew that most of their listeners were Republican despite the bashing they took in the R Congress for covering both sides of the war.

FAIR锟絪 study recorded every on-air source quoted in June 2003 on four National Public Radio news shows: All Things Considered, Morning Edition, Weekend Edition Saturday and Week-end Edition Sunday. Each source was classified by occupation, gender, nationality and partisan affiliation. Altogether, the study counted 2,334 quoted sources, featured in 804 stories.

Elite sources dominated NPR锟絪 guest-list. These sources锟絠ncluding government officials, professional experts and corporate representatives锟絘ccounted for 64 percent of all sources

* * *

Sources identified as workers on NPR programming in June accounted for 2.3 percent of overall sources and 1.8 percent of U.S. sources. But spokespersons for organized labor were almost invisible, numbering just six sources, or 0.3 percent of the total.

* * *

Women were dramatically underrepresented on NPR in 1993 (19 percent of all sources), and they remain so today (21 percent).

Looking at partisan sources锟絠ncluding government officials, party officials, campaign workers and consultants锟絉epublicans outnumbered Democrats by more than 3 to 2 (61 percent to 38 percent). A majority of Republican sources when the GOP controls the White House and Congress may not be surprising, but Republicans held a similar though slightly smaller edge (57 percent to 42 percent) in 1993, when Clinton was president and Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. And a lively race for the Democratic presidential nomination was beginning to heat up at the time of the 2003 study.

It is hard to believe those people would work for so little honestly. If they are government funded, why are they having problems when the economy goes bad? According to Wikipedia the President makes 400k. Unbelievable that Obama would work for so little too.

I have to admit that I like NPR. They are the only station that takes the time to report the whole story not just the part that the sponsors are willing to pay for.|||Hon lots of people make more than the president, that's not an issue.

If you want to hire good people in broadcasting you pay. These salaries sound low for broadcasting, esp. when you compare to Limbaugh Hannity and those other dominant rightie talkers - who admittedly are paid by private companies. And since we cannot control what is on the privately funded radio stations, the only place where all opinions can be sure of receiving an airing is through publicly funded radio. Same reasoning for publicly funded political campaigns, let the opposition views have a voice.

I like NPR, you know why? My conservative friends say it's too liberal AND my liberal friends say it's too centrist. They must be getting something right!!|||Since they have done far more to inform the American people of the truth about our government's actions over the last 8 years than the American President has, I think it only fitting that they are paid more!!|||Yes I was. All NPR's employees are Hippies. Hippies don't need jobs. They live in the forest. They only eat twigs, berries, leafy plants and roots and stuff. Now that NPR has tanked, there'll be no need for them to leave the forest, except for an occasional Gay Pride March or Bonaroo.|||I thought that the Republicans Congress cut funds to NPR long time ago - in 1994 maybe. Nowadays NPR relies on public donation, not taxpayers' money. Salaries are subjected to demand and supply also.|||No.

The failed policies of george w bush have already done enough damage.

It's just sad to see even more people lose their jobs under dumbya's administration.|||They have to be as successful as Air America, so George Soros should take them over as well. Both have about the same number of listeners 12.

Do not worry, once Braq takes office, he will put the Fairness Doctrine in place and NPR will be the only place we can get news. Lord knows we get nothing from the MSM anymore, other than "tingles up my leg" garbage.

And as for clowns and a high salary, should we reduce the Presidents salary since he is the Clown Elect.|||It will only be a shame if they miss rush limbaugh,Chris Mathews and Alan Colmes 3 of the biggest boring jerkoffs to ever open a mouth,,man they gotta go too////|||Am I happy to hear 64 people lost their jobs? No. I thought Reps were the 'compassionate' party. Ha!|||Great question. I am never glad to see anyone laid off. I find it interesting that liberals are claiming the need to pay for talent then whine about CEO pay. I never understood the need for government broadcast networks. I do understand the military broadcast networks as they are tailored to a very special audience.

I hope these folks can find work elsewhere but the demise of npr won't cause me to lose any sleep at night.
